The Schwarz is slow and progressive (0.8mm/turn). The RPE is fast and forceful (0.9mm/turn, heavy-duty jackscrew). When the bone resists — especially in adults — the RPE delivers the kind of force needed to actually move the maxilla.
Pick the RPE if:
- You need faster expansion
- Marked transverse deficit
- Significant dental crowding
- You're an adult and the Schwarz isn't moving the needle
It's the removable equivalent of the fixed rapid expanders used in dental offices — with the added benefit that you can take it out to eat and clean.
